Sam: By rights we shouldn't even be here, but we are.  It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo, the ones that really mattered, full of darkness and danger they were and sometimes you didn't want to know the ending, because how could it be good?  How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bas happened, but in the end it is only a passing thing this shadow, even darkness must pass, a new day will come and when the sun shines it will shine all the clearer.  Those are the stories that stayed with you, that meant something, even if you were too small to understand why.  I do understand, I know now.  Folks in those stories had many chances of turning back, only they didn't, because they were holding on to something.
Frodo: What are we holding on to?
Sam: That there is some good in this world, and it is worth fighting for.

Frodo: It's a pity that Bilbo didn't kill him (Gollum) when he had the chance.
Gandalf: Pity? It was pity that stayed Bilbo's hand.  Many that live deserve death, and some that die deserve life, can you give it to them, Frodo?  Do not be so eager to deal out death and judgement.  Even the very wise cannot see all ends. My heart tells me that Gollum still has a part to play, for good or ill, before this is over.  The pity of Bilbo may rule the fate of Men.

Frodo: I wish the ring had never come to me.  I wish none of this had happened
Gandalf: So do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide.  All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.  There are other forces at work in this world beside the work of evil.

Sir Thomas More: I am commanded by the king to be brief, and since I am the king's obedient subject, brief I will be. I die His Majesty's good servant, but God's first.
Sir Thomas More: [to executioner, handing him his wages]
Sir Thomas More: I forgive you, right readily. Be not afraid of your office: you send me to God.
Archbishop Cranmer: You're very sure of that, Sir Thomas?
Sir Thomas More: He will not refuse one who is so blithe to go to Him

Sir Thomas More: If we lived in a state where virtue was profitable, common sense would make us saintly.  But since we see that avarice, anger, pride and stupidity commonly profit far beyond charity, modesty, justice, and thought, then we must stand fast a little, even at the risk of being heroes.
